Gerard Brandon was a native of County Donegal, Ireland. He was a follower of Robert Emmet and escaped to America on the failure of his cause, settling in Charleston, South Carolina. He served in the War of the Revolution under Francis Marion and in Colonel Washington's cavalry and took part in the battles of Cowpens and Kings Mountain. He migrated to West Florida about 1782 settling at Natchez in present day Mississippi.
He was on the list of American and English Prisoners of War from Natchez desiring to settle at Attakakapas, Opelousas and New Iberia in 1781.
Robert Emmet was an Irish nationalist rebel leader. He led an abortive rebellion against British rule in 1803 and was captured, tried and executed.
