Plantations of US Presidents
Issaquena Co., MS.

Balfour
William L. Balfour who owned and lived on Homestead Plantation in Madison Co. also owned this plantation.
William L. had a son named William Suggs Balfour. William S. married Catherine Hunt in 1850. They built one of the grandest mansions near Natchez on Homewood Plantation. Construction began in 1855 and lasted for five years until the mansion was finally completed in 1860. While the mansion was being constructed, they lived on the Issaquena County plantation (probably Only Plantation) that William inherited from his father, who died during this time.
This plantation probably did not have any sort of grand house for the owners to live in because William L. did not live here; and when William S. inherited it, he built his residence on Homewood Plantation in Adams Co., MS. Only Plantation probably just had a modest house on it for the overseer to live in.

William T. Balfour (Warren Co., MS),
From the 1860 Federal Slave Schedule, William S. Balfour had 177 slaves managed by G.W. Murfee in Issaquena Co. Thus, these slaves were probably all on Only Plantation.
