Clara Adams, whose maiden name is Stuart, was one of the first slaveholders I researched years ago. She is related to the Stewart family in the Mississippi and Louisiana area. Some of that family decided to spell their name Stuart.

Amos Adams was a bachelor when he was listed in the 1830 Census with one slave, a female between 24 and 36 years of age. Listed also in the household
is one Free Person of Color, a male under ten years of age. Amos married Clara Lucretia Stuart in 1831.

Amos Adams is listed in the 1840 Census with 5 slaves. In the 1850 Census he is listed with 47 slaves. Amos died in 1859. Clara Adams operated the plantation after his death. She is listed in the 1860 Census with 62 slaves.

My aunt, age 93, told me that her grandfather came from a plantation near New Orleans that was owned by a family related to President John Quincy Adams. Amos Adams is related to the family of John Quincy Adams.
